| Summary, etc. | Apparues au début du xxe siècle, les primaires se sont progressivement imposées aux États-Unis. Et ce n’est que depuis les années 1970 que la plupart des États ont confié aux citoyens la désignation des candidats aux élections, y compris présidentielles. Les partis s’efforcent néanmoins de conserver un contrôle important sur le choix effectué. Face aux tentatives des États d’ouvrir plus largement le cercle des électeurs, les juridictions ont souvent protégé la liberté d’association des partis. Un nouveau type de primaires qui se développe depuis peu pourrait cependant changer la donne. |

| Summary, etc. | Primaries first appeared in the early 20th century and became gradually accepted. It was only in the 1970s that most of the states entrusted their citizens with the designation of electoral candidates, including for the presidential election. However, political parties still try to maintain an important control over their choice. Confronted with attempts by the states to increase the number of voters, the courts have usually protected the right of association of political parties. A new type of primaries that has emerged recently may, however, change the situation. |
