| Summary, etc. | RésuméÀ partir d’une recherche ethnographique menée dans un réseau de bénévoles en Suisse romande (francophone), cet article a pour but de rendre compte des enjeux relatifs à la position des accompagnants en fin de vie bénévoles, partagée entre une « quête » existentielle et/ou spirituelle et un certain nombre de contraintes médicales, institutionnelles, voire sociales. Le point central de cette contribution est de comprendre comment l’un et l’autre de ces niveaux s’imbriquent et donnent corps à la relation d’accompagnement. En mettant au jour un certain nombre de tensions, l’auteur peut élaborer un certain nombre de propositions quant au statut heuristique de la notion d’accompagnement pour les sciences sociales. |

| Summary, etc. | This article explores the activities of volunteers who work with people who are terminally ill and dying in Switzerland (French part). Following an ethnographic approach, it aims to explore the peculiar position of volunteers, which is divided between on the one hand an existential or spiritual « quest »; on the other hand some medical, institutional or social dimensions able to obstacle their intervention. The crucial point here is getting to know how this sort of ‘existential quest’ is carried out (when it does) within the context of medical institutions. In parallel it is to emphasize that the accompanying process depends on several paradoxical tensions. As such, this analysis allows the author to propose some assumptions towards the concept of accompaniment and its heuristic value for social sciences. |
