| Summary, etc. | Resumé L’administration pénitentiaire a deux missions : d’une part exécuter les décisions et les sentences pénales, d’autre part favoriser la réinsertion sociale des personnes qui lui sont confiées par l’autorité judiciaire. La surveillance est le procédé le plus volontiers utilisé pour mener ces missions à bien. Mais, alors que les objets technologiques sont de plus en plus souvent associés à cette activité de surveillance, quelle analyse réserve-t-on à l’activité visuelle des personnels pénitentiaires ? Quels effets cette activité incessante produit-elle sur la garde des personnes détenues ? L’approche psychologique et la caractérisation de la fonction scopique des personnels de surveillance, permettent ici un nouvel éclairage des relations intersubjectives en milieu carcéral. Un exemple clinique traduit certains des enjeux psychiques à l’œuvre dans l’acte de surveiller ; il permet d’ouvrir des perspectives sur les orientations à venir pour le personnel concerné. |

| Summary, etc. | Looking the other way The penitentiary administration has two missions : on the one hand, implementing lawful decisions and sentencing, on the other hand easing social rehabilitation for incarcerated persons. Themain way to performthese missions is reinforcing the close observation on detainees. Yet, as technological devices aremore andmore often associated to this surveillance,what understanding can we develop on the visual activity of the prison staff ? The psychological approach which investigates the scopic function of the detention personnel provides a new perspective on intersubjective relationships in prison. A clinical example illustrated some of the psychic schemes at stake in the act of watching over. Further adjustments for the staff are discussed. |
