| Summary, etc. | L’auteur aborde les relations entre laïcité et démocratie à partir d’une définition sociologique de la laïcité. Cette définition applique le concept de laïcité à une pluralité de contextes nationaux. L’auteur illustre ce concept à l’aide d’une enquête réalisée auprès d’adolescents français et allemands, portant entre autres sur leurs représentations de l’islam et plus spécifiquement du foulard islamique. L’auteur distingue quatre conceptions différentes de la laïcité : la première est tournée vers la liberté de conscience, la seconde vers l’émancipation ; la troisième est culturelle et la dernière théologique. Chacune de ces conceptions détermine un rapport particulier entretenu entre la laïcité et la démocratie. |

| Summary, etc. | Laicity and Democracy: Between Liberty of Conscience and EmancipationThe author examines the relationship between laicity and democracy from a sociological definition of laicity. This definition allows the concept of laicity to be applied to a plurality of national contexts. The paper provides an illustration of this concept based on a research carried out among French and German teenagers bearing particularly upon their representations of Islam and specifically with regard to the Islamic headscarf. From this the author identifies four different conceptions of laicity: the first focuses on freedom of conscience and religion, the second on emancipation, the third is cultural and the last is theological. Each of these conceptions entails a particular relationship between laicity and democracy. |
