| Summary, etc. | À partir de l’œuvre de l’écrivain, William Styron, nous évoquons le traumatisme représenté par la perte d’un parent à l’adolescence et les différentes stratégies adoptées pour y faire face. Dans le récit autobiographique « Face aux ténèbres. Chronique d’une folie », écrit à l’âge de 65 ans, Styron rend compte de la dépression mélancolique qu’il vient de traverser. Cette chronique se termine par l’évocation de la mort de sa mère quand il avait treize ans, souvenir soudainement retrouvé après avoir écouté une mélodie de Brahms, qu’elle avait autrefois chanté. Styron introduit alors l’hypothèse d’un deuil gelé à la suite de cette perte, puis il évoque le désir de guérir qui accompagne cette reviviscence. Dans trois nouvelles publiées par la suite, « Un matin de Virginie – Trois histoires de jeunesse », Styron poursuit ce travail de mémoire et suit le fil associatif de ses souvenirs, reflétant ses expériences à l’âge de vingt, dix et treize ans. L’auteur donne des clés pour comprendre ce qui avait pu être source de souffrance, les défenses pour y échapper, les solutions successivement trouvées pour affronter – ou non – ce traumatisme : l’engagement dans l’armée, l’écriture, le recours à l’alcool. Ces nouvelles témoignent de la reprise tardive du travail de deuil suspendu à l’adolescence. |

| Summary, etc. | Based on the work of the writer, William Styron, we discuss the trauma of losing a parent during adolescence and the different strategies adopted to cope with it. In an autobiographical story, “Facing the Darkness. Chronicle of a Madness”, written at the age of 65, Styron gives an account of the melancholic depression he has just gone through. This chronicle ends with the evocation of his mother’s death when he was thirteen years old, a memory suddenly recovered after listening to a Brahms melody, which she had once sung. Styron then introduces the hypothesis of a frozen mourning following this loss, and then he evokes the desire to heal that accompanies this revival. In three short stories published later, “A Virginia Morning – Three Stories of Youth”, Styron continues this memory work and follows the associative thread of his memories, reflecting his experiences at the ages of twenty, ten, and thirteen. The author gives keys to understand what could have been a source of suffering, the defenses to escape it, the solutions successively found to face – or not – this trauma: the engagement in the army, writing, the recourse to alcohol. These short stories testify to the late resumption of the work of mourning suspended during adolescence. |
