| Summary, etc. | L’article s’appuie sur différentes sources (documents, entretiens et archives de Charles Mérieux) pour analyser le travail de mobilisation de la Fondation Mérieux en faveur du développement de l’épidémiologie appliquée des années 1970 aux années 1990. On montre que si la Fondation œuvre « par le bas », aux marges de l’État, à la production et à la diffusion d’un nouveau savoir, via notamment un dispositif de formation continue, son président se consacre en parallèle, « par le haut », à une activité de sollicitation constante des plus hauts responsables politiques et administratifs de l’État. En proposant une alternative aux politiques de santé tout en interagissant avec les sommets de l’État, la politique de la Fondation agit d’une manière typiquement philanthropique. |

| Summary, etc. | Thanks to various sources (documents, interviews, and Charles Mérieux’s professional archives), this article analyzes the part played by the Mérieux Foundation in the development of applied epidemiology in France from the 1970s to the 1990s. On the one hand, the foundation contributed “from the bottom,” at the margins of the state, to the production and the dissemination of new knowledge, thanks to a specific training institute. On the other hand, it contributed “from the top,” as its president was in touch with high level civil servants and government members (even the French presidents), keeping them informed about developments. Providing an alternative to government health policies whilst interacting with the country’s top leaders at the same time, the Mérieux Foundation’s policy seems to have been typically philanthropic. |
