| Summary, etc. | De manière inattendue, ces trente dernières années en Bretagne, la critique du productivisme agricole a entraîné, s’agissant des élevages porcins intensifs, le renforcement de l’idéal industrialiste et le développement des exploitations les plus capitalistes. Éclairer ce paradoxe exige d’abord de reconstituer les dynamiques qui ont conduit, au plan local, à faire des atteintes à l’environnement générées par ce système d’élevage le problème public qu’elles n’étaient pas. Mais cette démarche ne suffit pas. Dans cet article, on plaide pour la compléter par une analyse en termes de conflit de modernités et de processus de modernisation. L’emploi de ces deux notions, à condition de leur redonner un sens proprement sociologique, permet de lutter contre l’oubli par les chercheurs d’une part, du rôle joué dans la vie sociale par les idéaux et les utopies, d’autre part, du mouvement qu’impulsent les évolutions de longue durée dont la dynamique génère dans le présent contradictions et paradoxes. |

| Summary, etc. | Paradox of modernizationUnexpectedly, during the last thirty years in Brittany, France, the criticism of agricultural productivism has led, with regard to intensive pig farming, to reinforcing the industrialist ideal and to developing more capitalist farms. To explain such a paradox first requires us to reconstruct the dynamics that led, at the local level, to turning the environmental damage caused by this farming system into the public problem that it was not initially considered to be. But this step is not enough. This article argues that it should be complemented with an analysis in terms of conflict of modernities and of modernization processes. The use of both of these notions, provided that they are given a proper sociological meaning, makes it possible to fight against oversight by researchers of the role played in social life by ideals and utopias, on the one hand, and on the other hand, of the movement impelled by the long-term evolutions whose dynamics generate contradictions and paradoxes in the present. |
