Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | The history of French psychiatry in english-speaking countriesFrom 1940 to the middle of the decade 1980, the works on history of psychiatry in the USA and the United Kingdom have been written essentially by physicians and not by professional historians. In these publications, France is considered as the birthplace of the psychiatric specialty. The first alienists (Pinel, Esquirol and their pupils) are celebrated with hagiographic emphasis. Janet is considered on the same rank than Freud. In the USA, the book of the psychoanalyst Zilboorg (1941) is the main reference during about twenty years. He has inspired those of Ackerknecht (1958), Schneck (1960) and Alexander (1966). In England, the anthology of Hunter and Macalpine (1963) is more critical. An American historian, Ilza Veith, publishes in 1965 the first history of hysteria. The antipsychiatrist Thomas Szasz draws up a caricatural picture of Pinel and of Janet. From 1970, many syndromes in English and American psychiatry come from French classical authors, in the fields of schizophrenia (Pinel), delusional disorders ( folie à deux, Clérambault, Capgras) and neurosis (Briquet). The reference texts of Jean-Pierre Falret, Briquet, Lasègue and Jules Falret, Chaslin, Sérieux and Capgras, Dupré, Clérambault, Minkowski, are translated in English. |
