| Summary, etc. | The history of schizophrenia “before Bleuler” highlights usually the so-called dementia praecox, notably from the writings of Kahlbaum, Hecker and Kraepelin. Generally attributed to psychiatrist Bénédict Morel, in his Études Cliniques, the term dementia praecox originally describes a pathological state following episodes of manic excitement, manifested by a general deterioration of intellectual and emotional faculties, occurring at an precocious stage, well before the senile stage, at the end of a human life. However, François-Emmanuel Fodéré’s Traité du délire, published more than 35 years earlier, uses the term dementia praecox to designate such a pathological state, which Pinel and Esquirol had already mentioned. It seems therefore relevant to revise this part of the history of schizophrenia by integrating French alienism of the early 19th century. |

| Summary, etc. | L’histoire de la schizophrénie « avant Bleuler » met généralement en exergue la démence dite précoce, issue notamment des écrits de Kahlbaum, Hecker et Kraepelin. Habituellement attribué au psychiatre Bénédict Morel, dans ses Études cliniques, le terme de démence précoce décrit, à l’origine, un état pathologique faisant suite à des épisodes d’excitation maniaque, qui se manifeste par une détérioration générale des facultés intellectuelles et affectives, et survient à un stade qualifié de précoce, très antérieur au stade sénile, concluant la vie d’un être humain. Cependant, le Traité du délire de François-Emmanuel Fodéré, publié plus de trente-cinq ans auparavant, contient l’expression de démence précoce pour désigner cet état pathologique, que Pinel et Esquirol avaient déjà évoqué. Ainsi, il paraît judicieux de réviser cette part de l’histoire de la schizophrénie en y intégrant l’aliénisme français du début du XIXe siècle. |
