Mais déjà s’ouvre le débat de son application à l’espèce humaine, en distinguant ses deux modalités possibles, le clonage reproductif et le clonage thérapeutique. L’accord est général pour condamner le premier, censé répondre à une motivation égo ïste de dédoublement et de prolongation de l’individu cloné. Alors que le second, le clonage thérapeutique, bénéficie de beaucoup d’indulgence, justifiée par l’espoir que les énormes potentialités des cellules souches embryonnaires puissent un jour en faire un matériel de réparation des tissus et organes usagés. Peut-on accepter si vite que le débat soit enfermé dans une opposition aussi manichéenne ? |

| Summary, etc. | what dream lies behind cloning ? reproduction or immortality The latest expression of technical innovations in the field of reproduction, cloning, is still at an experimental stage. However, a debate has already begun concerning its application to the human species by distinguishing two possible modalities : reproductive cloning and therapeutic cloning. There is general agreement that the first should be condemned in that it seems to respond to an egotistical motivation to recreate the self and to prolong the cloned individual. The second, on the other hand, therapeutic cloning, is met with much more indulgence, justified by the hope in the enormous potential of embryonic stem cells which may one day create material to repare worn out tissues and organs. Is it possible to accept that the debate remain determined by such a bipolar opposition ? |

Pero ya esta surgiendo el debate de su aplicación a la especie humana, distinguiendo dos modalidades posibles : el clonaje reproductivo y el clonaje terapéutico. El acuerdo es general en condenar el primero, que parece obedecer a una motivación egoista de desdoblamiento y de prolongación del individuo clonado. Mientras que el segundo, el clonaje terapéutico, beneficia de mucha indulgencia, justificada por la esperanza de las enormes posibilidades de las células madre embrionarias que puedan un dia constituir un material de reparación de los tejidos y de los órganos usados. ¿ Hay que aceptar con tanta celeridad que el debate se limite a una oposición tan maniquea ? |
