| Summary, etc. | La nature du développement urbain et suburbain est habituellement considérée comme très différente dans chaque grande région du monde. La plupart des chercheurs se sont intéressés à la ville « américaine », ou « africaine », ou « chinoise », sans mentionner l’aménagement suburbain dans d’autres régions. De ce fait, ils laissent entendre que le pays ou la région en question connaît un développement caractéristique et que toute comparaison avec d’autres régions du monde est impossible ou simplement inutile. Cet article propose un référentiel d’étude systématique des sujets et des problématiques de développement suburbain à travers trois axes d’analyse : (i) les processus qui façonnent le développement suburbain et le réaménagement consécutifs, (ii) les formes prises par le développement et le réaménagement, et (iii) les questions politiques / les enjeux de planification liés. Dans un premier temps, nous aborderons les conditions que les chercheurs, étudiant le rôle de la terre dans l’aménagement suburbain, doivent prendre en considération. Puis nous démontrerons que, malgré les spécificités locales et régionales, ce référentiel peut être utile dans tout contexte urbain, y compris ceux auxquels il est parfois fait référence comme le « Nord » et le « Sud ». |

| Summary, etc. | Urban and suburban development in the major world regions has routinely been treated as being very different in character. Much more commonly, researchers have written about “American”, or “African”, or “Chinese” cities without reference to suburban development elsewhere. In so doing, they have implied that the nation or region in question is distinctive and that comparisons are either impossible or unhelpful. This article suggests a framework for studying topics and issues of suburban development systematically by proposing three distinct ways of analysis : (i) processes that shape suburban land development and subsequent redevelopment, (ii) forms taken by development and redevelopment, and (iii) the associated policy/planning issues. We start with types of conditions that need to be considered by researchers who study the role of land in suburban development. Further we suggest that, despite local and regional differences, this framework is usefully in any urban context, including those that are sometimes referred to as the Global North and Global South. |
