| Summary, etc. | Cet article propose une définition de la région dans l’Union européenne sur le plan cartographique. La carte montre qu’il existe bien un modèle régional européen ; or la réalité qu’il recouvre est diverse. La région moyenne de l’Union européenne est plutôt petite avec une population dépassant légèrement 1,2 millions d’habitants. Elle est plutôt macrocéphale avec une agglomération urbaine centrale par région. Il existe cependant des régions très différentes de ce modèle standard. C’est en particulier le cas des nouvelles régions françaises que la réforme récente a encore plus éloignées de ce modèle. Les régions françaises actuelles ne sont ni de taille, ni de profil européen. Elles sont parmi les plus grandes de l’Union, relativement sous peuplées et très peu macrocéphales. |

| Summary, etc. | This article proposes a definition of the region in the European Union and draws it in a map. It shows that there is indeed a European regional model but the reality that it covers is diverse. The average E.U. region is rather small with a number of population slightly above 1.2 million inhabitants. It is rather macrocephalic with a central urban agglomeration by region. There are, however, regions with a very different profile to this standard model. It is particularly the case of the new French regions, which the recent reform has fallen further from this model. The present French regions do not have a European size. They are among the biggest of the Union, sparsely populated in terms of density and non-macrocephalic. |
