520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. The risk behaviours that may be encountered among adolescents often involve the body in a game of seduction, provocation, or transgression. It seems that the body is torn between two contradictory requirements: concealment and display. Tattooing and body piercing are part of this game. These practices are increasingly widespread, they are socially acceptable body modifications, while other practices resemble forms of addictive self-mutilation. Can the study of traditional body marking practices shed light on present-day tattooing and piercing? This paper attempts to answer by studying common elements of the process of body marking: the importance of pain, the symbolism of blood, of the relationship between fire/metal and of body orifices, and the willingness to exceed limits. To conclude, therapists should pay special attention to this body game in order to distinguish between positive, playful or identity-building practices and pathologies caused by uncontrollable impulses.
