| Summary, etc. | Selon la définition classique en analyse de l’argumentation, consistant à se présenter comme « digne de foi », l’ethos s’articule aux enjeux sociologiques de présentation de soi et de mobilisation des identités sociales. Cette articulation s’avère utile pour expliquer l’implication des participants au forum de discussion ouvert sur l’internet, dans le cadre de la procédure consultative sur l’implantation d’un troisième aéroport international pour Paris ( ducsai) en 2001. L’analyse de l’intégralité des messages postés sur ce forum confirme l’importance de l’ethos comme ressource discursive en contexte d’argumentation polémique, notamment lorsqu’est mise en jeu la légitimité du point de vue avancé en termes d’intérêt général ou particulier. Les résultats indiquent que le développement des procédures délibératives et participatives s’inscrit dans un contexte communicationnel où les citoyens tendent à intervenir sans se départir de leur ancrage social et de leurs préférences tout en pouvant mobiliser stratégiquement la référence à l’intérêt général pour réduire l’ethos d’un contradicteur. |

| Summary, etc. | Classically defined in rhetoric as the means used by a speaker to be trusted, the ethos is thus connected with such issues for sociology as the self presentation and the social identities’ mobilizing. This relationship is fruitful to explain how and to which extent those who took part in the 2001 web forum of the consultative process regarding the location of a third international airport in the French capital area ( ducsai) did actually get involved. The extensive analysis of messages posted on this forum substantiate the critical part played by the ethos as a discursive resource in conflicting forms of argumentation, most particularly when the legitimacy of the stated opinion is disputed in terms of particular vs. general interest. The results show that the growth of deliberative and participatory procedures takes place in a communications context where citizens tend to express themselves in putting aside neither their social roots nor their policy preferences, and yet still strategically refer to the idea of general interest to weaken their opponent’s ethos. |
