| Summary, etc. | La mondialisation pose un défi à la pensée et à l’action. Cette rupture instauratrice se laisse difficilement saisir dans sa complexité par les spécialisations disciplinaires, tout comme elle semble ne pouvoir être maîtrisée par les instruments politiques et économiques adaptés aux réalités antérieures. La crise actuelle en fournit un révélateur par son caractère multidimensionnel. À cet égard, les échanges publiés dans les livraisons 13 et 14 de Questions de communication est instructif : tout en présentant une diversité de points de vue, il illustre la difficulté de croiser des perspectives différentes. La culture fournit un référentiel intéressant : invoquée trop souvent en termes de qualificatifs qui permettent de se replier sur des aspects singuliers concernant les beaux-arts, les industries culturelles, « l’exception culturelle », le divertissement, etc. Lorsque l’on accepte de la considérer comme le système symbolique qui constitue une société et la distingue des autres, c’est dans la mesure où elle épouse le moule « national » qui en serait la seule expression politiquement acceptable. La diversité culturelle est invoquée pour défendre la légitimité des politiques nationales. Ces prismes ne permettent pas de déchiffrer le paradigme du nouvel écosystème symbolique émergeant de la mondialisation culturelle qui affecte la capacité de socialisation de toutes les cultures existantes. On peut en voir les incidences dans le débat sur l’identité nationale amorcé en France et qui ne pourra être fructueux sans expliciter les liens dialectiques entre identité et culture, ainsi que la façon dont ces processus symboliques sont affectés par la mondialisation culturelle. Pour comprendre et vivre la mondialité, il faudra sans doute sortir de la perspective occidentalo-centrée, soi-disant universelle, pour connaître et intégrer d’autres points de vue – asiatiques notamment – qui permettront de composer avec les exigences du pluralisme culturel comme seul fondement réaliste du vivre ensemble. |

| Summary, etc. | Globalization poses great challenges for thought and action. This is because it is a multidimensional process of creative destruction that cannot easily be understood through the prisms of individual academic disciplines. Moreover, because it cannot be regulated by traditional political and economic tools alone, it cries out for inventive new politics. The current economic crisis is simultaneously political and cultural. The collection of articles on cultural globalization published in issues 13 and 14 of Questions de communication presents different perspectives which illustrate these difficulties and the barriers to real discussion and exchange on the subject. Debate about culture very often shifts grounds to consider very specific aspects of culture such as fine arts, the cultural industries, the « exception culturelle » , entertainment, etc. Considering a broader concept of culture as the symbolic system which constitutes a society and differentiates it from others,seems to be possible and politically acceptable, only by looking at the « national » mold. However, this multitude of prisms and definitions of culture do not allow us to decipher the deeper paradigm of the new symbolic system that is being generated by cultural globalization which affects the socializing power of every localized culture and consequently the ways in which they in turn constitute basic identities. In fact, because of globalization, culture is now a matter of realpolitik. Thus it is quite impossible to understand the world from a western-centered perspective on its own. We need also to acknowledge other perspectives, notably Asian, to make sense of and cope with the complexities of today’s cultural pluralism which constitutes the political foundation of living together. |
