| Summary, etc. | Le propos se concentre sur les représentations de la mort de guerre dans la presse magazine internationale, à travers quatre conflits armés de la fin du XXe siècle : les génocides biafrais et rwandais, les guerres civiles du Liban et d’ex-Yougoslavie. Ces représentations discursives et visuelles des tués de la guerre révèlent à la fois des différences de traitement selon l’origine ethnique des conflits mais aussi une hiérarchisation des victimes. De plus, que les reportages favorisent des représentations d’une mort brutale et massive, à l’image de massacres emblématiques de ces conflits, ou de l’individualisation de la souffrance des civils, ils en appellent souvent à l’émotionnel et, par-delà, à une intervention de la communauté internationale. Enfin, soulignant l’in-montrable plus que l’indicible, ces représentations cachent à la vue des spectateurs les morts portant atteinte à l’intégrité physique des corps, comme le démembrement et la décomposition. Au-delà des visions macabres, ces manières de dire et de faire voir questionnent aussi nos seuils de sensibilité dans notre rapport à la souffrance des autres, proche ou lointaine. |

| Summary, etc. | « The Agony of the Innocents » : Ways of Telling and Showing mass Death during Humanitarian Crises (1967-1994)This article focuses on representations of war death in newsmagazines, through four armed conflicts of the end of the 20th century : the Biafran and Rwandan genocides, the civil wars in Lebanon and the Balkans. These visual and discursive representations of war dead’s reveal some differences in the framing depending on the ethnic background of those conflicts, but also a hierarchy of the victims. Moreover, whether the reports tend to promote representations of a brutal and massive death, such as in emblematic massacres of those conflicts, or of an invidualization of the civilians suffering, they often appeal to emotions and beyond, to an intervention of the global community. Finally, by emphasizing representations that are more suitable for telling instead of viewing, newsmagazines hide from the spectators’ view deaths that damage the physical integrity of the body, such as dismemberment or disintegration. Beyond these macabre visions, these ways of telling and showing also question the limits in our sensibility towards others’ pain and our relation to close or distant suffering. |
