Summary, etc. | Bien qu’il fût l’objet d’un battage médiatique exceptionnel, Le Jeu de la mort a été un échec relatif. Cette contribution en examine les causes, depuis la promotion jusqu’à la réception. D’un bout à l’autre de la chaîne, ce programme vise d’abord à créer de l’émotion chez le téléspectateur et à lui faire peur devant les conséquences possibles du pouvoir de la télévision. En revanche, son examen détaillé empêche de le considérer comme une transposition juste de l’expérience de Stanley Milgram. En particulier, il néglige de prendre en compte la présence du public. Ce dispositif de jeu, épistémologiquement critiquable, est pourtant à la base de jugements de valeur qui touchent très vite ce « point Godwin » où le raisonnement n’a plus aucune prise. La quête du spectaculaire a finalement décrédibilisé le message scientifique. À sa manière, ce documentaire témoigne de la crise d’identité du service public de la télévision française. |

Summary, etc. | Game of Death or game with Fire ? The Lessons of a TV Preterition Although the Game of Death (Le Jeu de la mort) benefited from an exceptional media hype, it was a relative failure. This article examines its causes, since the promotion until the reception. Throughout this communication this program aims at first at creating some emotion at viewers and at frightening them by facing with possible consequences of the power of television. Moreover, the detailed analysis of the documentary prevents from considering it as a right transposition of the Milgram experiment. In particular, it neglects to take into account the presence of the public. This questionable game apparatus is nevertheless on the base of value judgments which reach very quickly this « Godwin point » where reasoning is no longer efficent. This quest of the spectacular finally discredits the scientific message. In its way, this documentary testifies of the identity crisis of the French Public Broadcasting Service. |
