520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. |

Summary, etc. | « This Guitar has only Seconds to live ». The Afterlife of Pete Townshend’s Guitars and the Contexts of Popular Music HeritageThis article considers how popular music is positioned as heritage. In particular, it explores how material culture associated with popular music is given meaning and value by differing organisations through their collection policies and modes of public display. Specific attention is given to the « afterlife » of two guitars smashed by Pete Townshend of the Who in what has become a trademark part of his stage performance. One of these guitars is on display at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London while the other can be seen in the Hard Rock Café, Chicago. By selecting similar objects on display in two very different environments it is possible to explore how their context, display design and interpretation impact on how meaning and value are constructed. |
