Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | ?This article presents how maps acquired the status of mediation. ? For a long time, only the mapping technics was considered worth working on; the thematic maps of the 19th century highlighted the need to also conceptualize how information is communicated with a map. Shortly after the Second World War, various cartographers considered the map as a mediation between emission and reception of information, amongst which Jacques Bertin and his sémiologie graphique (1967). The encounter between information theory and mapping theory will reach a peak with the map communication model, which will become the dominant model to think how to communicate with maps. The decline of this model in the 1990’s will foster new trends, divided between critical and scientific cartography. Information and communication sciences can provide key resources in this upcoming research agenda. |
