| Summary, etc. | Résumé Dans l’Italie du dernier tiers du 19e siècle aux années 1930, nombre d’intellectuels de renom élaborent des conceptions hostiles à l’idée de la politisation du peuple. Le peuple italien, qu’il soit appréhendé comme majorité inorganisée, comme foule potentiellement dangereuse ou comme masse à mobiliser doit être étroitement soumis à la classe politique minoritaire, aux élites culturelles, à un leader. Cette lecture est à ce point influente que les intellectuels socialistes et communistes, favorables à la politisation du peuple, doivent affronter ces doctrines élitistes pour mieux s’efforcer de les dépasser. |

| Summary, etc. | In Italy from the 1860’s to the 1930’s, renowned intellectuals developed theoretical views against the idea of the politization of their people. According to them, the Italian people, whether it be considered as an unorganized majority of individuals, a potentially dangerous mob or as a crowd that should be mobilized, must be strictly subjected to the minority political community, to the cultured elite or to a leader. The impact of these theses (ideas) was so considerable that socialist and communist intellectuals, though they were in favour of the politization of the people, had to confront these elitist doctrines to try and surpass them. |
