| Summary, etc. | Résumé Le post-marxisme de l’école d’Essex est une reconnaissance du caractère contingent des luttes et des identités sociales : l’abandon de toute référence à un sujet privilégié de l’émancipation en même temps qu’une tentative pour restituer la possibilité de la décision politique sur le terrain mouvant de la postmodernité. La notion de formation discursive, issue de la pensée foucaldienne, en est l’un des concepts centraux ; la trame symbolique de la Cité apparaît ainsi constituée d’un système instable de significations hétérogènes apposées sur les choses et les hommes, un discours dont la fixation hégémonique constitue l’enjeu des luttes politiques. A l’écart de toute téléologie essentialiste annonçant la fin de l’histoire, cette acceptation de la contingence comme terrain privilégié des conflits sociaux agit comme un renouveau du rôle de la politique en tant que décision de la structure sociale quant à son propre sens et du sujet quant à sa propre identité fluctuante et indécise. |

| Summary, etc. | The post-Marxism of the Essex School is a recognition of the contingent nature of social struggles and identities: the eschewal of any reference to a privileged subject of eman-cipation as well as an attempt to restore the possibility of political decision-making on the shifting sand of postmodernity. The notion of discursive formation, a product of Foucault’s thought, is one of the central concepts thereof; the symbolic framework of the polis thus appears to be composed of an unstable system of heterogeneous significations appended to things and people, a discourse whose hegemonic fixation constitutes the stakes of political struggles. Far from any essentialist teleology proclaiming the end of history, this acceptance of contingency as the privileged terrain of social conflicts serves to renew the role of politics as the deciding of the social structure with regard to its own meaning and of the subject with regard to its own fluctuating and unsettled identity. |
