| Summary, etc. | L’invention de l’imprimerie fut-elle le moyen d’une transformation progressive de la culture ou une véritable révolution ? Ce sont les deux thèses opposant apparemment, d’une part, le grand historien du temps long Lucien Febvre et le spécialiste du livre Henri-Jean Martin et, d’autre part, l’historienne américaine Elizabeth L. Eisenstein, dans deux grands livres publiés avec un quart de siècle d’écart. L’article reprend le mouvement de ces deux grandes recherches et leurs arguments, notamment sur les trois thèmes qui les relient : le mouvement général de la Renaissance et le développement des langues vernaculaires ; la Réforme et l’évolution de la chrétienté ; la naissance de la science moderne. Tandis que les deux premiers auteurs suivent pas à pas l’évolution de la production et du marché du livre, donc à la fois la géographie, la sociologie et l’économie du livre, la dernière tente de comprendre les bouleversements liés au livre pendant les deux premiers siècles de son développement dans la seule élite culturelle du temps. Elle met en évidence le fait central que le livre a totalement transformé le lien entre les diverses activités intellectuelles et met ainsi la communication permise par le livre au cœur de la naissance de la culture occidentale moderne. |

| Summary, etc. | Was the invention of printing a means of a progressive transformation of culture or a true revolution? These are the two theses apparently opposing, on the one hand, the great long time historian Lucien Febvre and the specialist of the book Henri-Jean Martin and, on the other hand, the American historian Elizabeth L. Eisenstein, in two great books published with a quarter of a century of difference. The article reiterates the movement of these two great researches and their arguments, in particular on the three themes that link them: the general movement of the Renaissance and the development of vernacular languages; the reform and evolution of Christianity; the birth of modern science. While the first two authors follow step by step the evolution of the production and the book market, thus both the geography, sociology and the economy of the book, the latter tries to understand the upheavals linked to the book during the first two centuries of its development in the only cultural elite of the time. It highlights the central fact that the book has completely transformed the link between the various intellectual activities and thus puts the communication allowed by the book at the heart of the birth of modern western culture. |
