| Summary, etc. | Le Léviathan, publié en 1651, se présente comme une théorie du corps politique artificiellement constitué au terme d’un contrat de soumission au souverain. Mais il offre aussi une réflexion fondatrice sur le « corps naturel » du Léviathan, complémentaire de son corps artificiel, dont l’examen permet de faire émerger un Hobbes « écosophe », articulant sa pensée environnementale à une réflexion sur la subjectivation politique. Le territoire hobbesien apparaît d’abord comme une réalité matérielle, un ensemble de corps humains et non-humains dont les mouvements doivent être étroitement contrôlés afin de maintenir la paix et la prospérité. Il est ensuite une terre promise, la contrepartie d’un contrat reliant le souverain aux citoyens. Il est enfin un espace de signes et d’images : la société civile ne peut se fonder que sur une cosmologie naturaliste dans laquelle les croyances aux fées, fantômes et autres phénomènes surnaturels sont inhibées par la peur que suscite le souverain. |

| Summary, etc. | Hobbes’ Leviathan, published in 1651, presents itself as a theory of the body politic as artificially constituted by contract and submission to the sovereign. But it also offers a major reflection on the Leviathan’s body natural. Examining the relationship between the Leviathan’s two bodies brings to light Hobbes’ “ecosophy”, i.e. his philosophy of the relationship between the material environment and the citizen’s subjectivity. Hobbes conceives of territory, first as a material reality, including both human and non-human natural bodies, whose movements must be strictly controlled in order to maintain peace and prosperity. Secondly, the Leviathan’s territory is also a promised land, the counterpart of a contract that binds the sovereign state to its citizens. Finally it is a space of phantasms, signs and images. Civil society can only emerge from a cosmology in which beliefs in fairies, ghosts and other supernatural phenomena are inhibited by the fact that citizens are kept in awe by the sovereign’s incomparable power. |
