| Summary, etc. | Dans leur dernier ouvrage, Philippe Van Parijs et Yannick Vanderborght présentent le revenu de base inconditionnel comme une « alternative radicale » non seulement au « néolibéralisme », mais aussi à ce qu’ils nomment le « paléo-socialisme ». L’article propose d’élucider cette justification en montrant pourquoi l’alternative envisagée repose à bien y regarder sur une certaine interprétation de la démarchandisation comme visée politique de l’État social. Le revenu de base est en effet présenté comme une forme radicale de démarchandisation des supports d’existence, mais aussi comme un moyen non-coercitif d’inciter les chômeurs à accepter un emploi, et par conséquent comme un outil au service d’une certaine marchandisation du travail. L’alternative offerte par le revenu de base fait ainsi apparaître une ambivalence : il s’agirait à la fois de démarchandiser le travail des actifs, contre une marchandisation « néolibérale », mais aussi de remarchandiser le travail des inactifs, contre une démarchandisation « paléosocialiste ». L’article met ensuite en perspective les limites de cette défense du revenu de base à l’aune d’une conception plus étendue et plus exigeante du concept de démarchandisation : la liberté de choisir son travail qu’offrirait le revenu de base ne garantit pas en tant que telle l’occupation d’une place dans la société, et elle ne suppose pas une organisation démocratique et démarchandisée de la production, mais repose in fine sur l’expression de préférences individuelles sur le marché. |

| Summary, etc. | In their latest opus, Philippe Van Parijs and Yannick Vanderborght invite us to see basic income as a “radical alternative” to both “neoliberalism” and what they call “old socialism”. The article attempts to put this argument into perspective by showing why the alternative rests on a particular interpretation of decommodification as the main political horizon of the welfare state. Basic income is indeed presented as a radical way of decommodifying the means of life, but also as a non-coercive incentive to work, and therefore as a tool for commodification. The ambivalence of the alternative is thus underlined: a basic income would decommodify labour, going against a “neoliberal” politics of commodification, and, at the same time, recommodify labour, this time going against an “old socialist” politics of decommodification. The article then stresses the limits of basic income with regards to a broader and more demanding understanding of decommodification: the freedom of choice that basic income is supposed to offer would by itself not guarantee any access to a given social position, and it does not rely on a democratic organisation of production and a collective understanding of needs, but rather on the expression of individual preferences through the market. |
