| Summary, etc. | Les sciences sociales n’ont ni fonction ni valeur prédictive. Leur rôle est de s’interroger sur le sens des phénomènes observés. Aussi, à l’inverse de ce que semble appeler le titre de cette contribution, l’objet de cet article est moins d’apporter une réponse à la question posée sur l’avenir de l’impératif participatif que de fournir l’occasion d’en poser d’autres. L’auteur propose de travailler de manière synthétique cette interrogation en observant sa diffraction en de multiples sous-questions, plus ou moins indépendantes et interreliées. À travers une série de sept questions structurantes, sont passés en revue les modalités et les enjeux contemporains de la démocratie participative. Elles tirent le bilan d’une décennie de recherches et d’expériences relatives à la participation citoyenne, fait de doutes et de craintes multiples mais soucieux de décrire une réalité complexe prise entre des processus démocratiques et de dé-démocratisation. |

| Summary, etc. | The social sciences have no function or predictive value. Their role is to question the meaning of observed phenomena. Thus, contrary to what the title of this contribution seems to call for, the purpose of this article is not so much to provide an answer to the question asked about the future of the participatory imperative as to provide an opportunity to ask others. The author proposes to work on this question in a synthetic way by observing its diffraction into multiple sub-questions, more or less independent and interrelated. Through a series of seven structuring questions, the author reviews the modalities and contemporary issues of participatory democracy. They draw the balance sheet of a decade of research and experiences related to citizen participation, made of multiple doubts and fears but concerned with describing a complex reality caught between democratic processes and “de-democratisation”. |
