| Summary, etc. | Entre 2004 et 2021, l’Espagne a été condamnée 12 fois par la CEDH (Cour européenne des droits de l’homme) pour violation de l’article 3 de la Convention européenne pour la prévention de la torture et des peines ou traitements inhumains ou dégradants. Comment la presse espagnole, en particulier le quotidien El País, a-t-elle accueilli les débats suscités par ces faits ? Pour le dire, nous avons procédé à l’analyse de la composante narrative de deux controverses suscitées par des cas de torture « célèbres » : celui qui a donné lieu à la mort de Joseba Arregui Izaguirre en 1981 et celui d’Igor Portu Juanenea et de Mattin Sarasola Yarzabal, jugé par la CEDH en 2008. L’examen du master narrative de ces deux controverses, présentées par El País, à travers un corpus de 1 215 articles, révèle un travail politique consistant à mobiliser le public en vue du renouvellement de sa confiance dans les institutions du pays plutôt qu’en faveur d’une action auprès du gouvernement pour garantir les droits humains dans les lieux de détention de l’État. |

| Summary, etc. | Between 2004 and 2021 Spain has been condemned 12 times by the ECHR (European Court of Human Rights) for violation of Article 3 of the European Convention for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment. How has the Spanish press, in particular the daily El País, reacted to the debate on these facts? To find out, we analysed the narrative component of two controversies arising from “famous” torture cases: the one that led to the death of Joseba Arregui Izaguirre in 1981 and the one of Igor Portu Juanenea and Mattin Sarasola Yarzabal, judged by the ECHR in 2008. An examination of the master narrative of these two controversies, presented by the daily El País, through a corpus of 1,215 articles, reveals a political work consisting of mobilising the public for a renewal of its confidence in the country’s institutions rather than in favour of taking action against the government to guarantee human rights in places of detention of the State. |
