| Summary, etc. | Qu’est-il arrivé au cours du XXe siècle au travail féminin ? Compter le nombre de femmes au travail dans la France du XXe siècle et conter l’histoire de ces chiffres, tel est le propos de cet article. À partir d’une recherche sur les statistiques du travail, de l’emploi et du chômage des femmes de 1901 à 2011, les auteures tentent de répondre à quelques interrogations élémentaires, mais embarrassantes : les femmes travaillent-elles beaucoup plus en 2010 qu’en 1950, 1920 ou 1901 ? La discontinuité des trajectoires professionnelles des femmes est-elle ancrée dans l’histoire ? Comment la division sociale du travail entre hommes et femmes a-t-elle évolué ? Décryptant sociologiquement l’évolution des statistiques et de leurs définitions au fil des ans et des recensements de la population, les auteures montrent comment le travail des femmes a bien souvent suscité le doute : mécompté, décompté, et parfois recalculé à la faveur d’illusions d’optiques dues à des modifications de frontières statistiques. Réfutant, chiffres à l’appui, le soupçon d’inactivité qui, de façon récurrente, pèse sur les femmes, les auteures mettent en évidence le poids indiscutable de leur activité laborieuse dans le fonctionnement économique, sa remarquable constance, en dépit des crises et des récessions, par-delà les périodes de guerre et d’après-guerre. Jamais moins du tiers, et désormais près de la moitié de la population active : telle est la part des femmes dans le monde professionnel au XXe siècle en France. |

| Summary, etc. | How did women’s employment evolve in the twentieth century? What is the number of women at work in France in the twentieth century and how telling are these figures, is what the present article means to study. The authors will try, thanks to the existing statistics on women’s work, employment and unemployment from 1901 to 2011, to answer some obvious, but tricky questions such as: do women work more in 2010 than they did back in 1950, 1920 or 1901? Can the discontinued careers of women be explained historically? How has the social division of work between men and women evolved? The authors will try to understand how sociologically significant such statistical evolutions are, how telling the changes in definitions, along the years and according to the different population censuses, in order to show how sceptical people have often been with regards to women’s involvement in the workplace: miscalculated, underrated and sometimes recounted according to how statistics evolved and changed the perspective. The authors question the fact that women have all too often been thought inactive when figures clearly point out that their work has indisputably played a major role in the economy, and that they have never stopped working even in times of crises and recessions, long after the wars and the years immediately following had gone by. There has never been less than one third of women in the workplace in France in the twentieth century and they now account for close to half of the working population. |
