| Summary, etc. | Depuis les années 1970, le patrimoine des Français a plus que doublé. Plus important peut-être, ce retour du patrimoine s’accompagne d’un changement profond de sa composition puisque, en France comme dans de nombreux pays, la composante héritée du patrimoine tend désormais à dominer la composante accumulée. Le retour de l’héritage pose de nombreuses questions, à la fois sur l’ampleur des inégalités et sur leurs déterminants. Loin d’être un simple retour au XIXe siècle, l’héritage connait aussi des mutations profondes qu’il est nécessaire de prendre en compte pour mieux comprendre la réalité des transmissions patrimoniales. |

| Summary, etc. | Private wealth and inheritance : Returning to the past ?Since the 1970s, the private wealth of French households has doubled. More importantly, this trend has been accompanied by significant changes in the nature of wealth. In France, as in many other countries, the share of inherited wealth is now larger than the accumulated component of wealth. Inheritance has made a comeback, and this raises many questions about the scale of inequality and its determinants. This trend is far from simply being a return to the nineteenth century, as inheritance has undergone profound transformations, which must be taken into account in order to better understand transmissions of wealth. |
