| Summary, etc. | Un salaire minimum trop élevé conduirait à des destructions d’emplois. Cet article propose une brève histoire de cette très ancienne assertion, et débouche sur deux constats. Le premier est l’opposition permanente entre l’invocation des lois incontournables de l’économie et les projets visant à l’amélioration du sort des salariés.Cette tension était présente dès la mise en place des premiers dispositifs au début du XXe siècle, et un débat similaire s’est développé aux États-Unis, notamment après la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Le second constat est que ce débat a pris une tournure très technique en raison des développements de la science économique et du recours croissant à l’économétrie. Cependant les études empiriques les plus récentes conduisent à une remise en cause progressive du principe selon lequel une augmentation du salaire minimum conduirait mécaniquement à des pertes d’emploi. |

| Summary, etc. | Too high a minimum wage leads to the destruction of jobs. This article offers a brief history of this age-old statement, and it makes two observations. The first concerns the perpetual conflict between those invoking certain incontrovertible rules of economics and those making plans to improve the lot of employees.This tension has been around since the implementation of the first schemes at the start of the twentieth century, and a similar debate developed in the United States, particularly after the Second World War. The second observation is that this debate has taken a very technical turn in light of developments in economics and an increasing reliance on econometrics. However, the latest empirical studies lead to a steady reconsideration of the principle that raising the minimum wage automatically causes jobs to be lost. |
