| Summary, etc. | Ernest Lavisse est une des figures majeures de la IIIe République. Il a joué un rôle incontestable tant au niveau de l’organisation des études universitaires, de la direction de trois Histoire de France, que de la publication de nombreux manuels scolaires du primaire, les Petits Lavisse. Il pourrait sembler évident qu’il ait mené activement le combat pour les valeurs de la République, notamment la laïcité. Une étude attentive permet cependant de mettre en évidence de quelle manière ses manuels scolaires ont longtemps été en retard face aux progrès de la laïcité. Entre permanence d’une lecture chrétienne de l’histoire et transfert de sacralité du religieux à la nation, il prône, mais tardivement et progressivement, une conception ouverte de la laïcité à même de répondre aux inquiétudes des catholiques et de les accompagner vers la République. |

| Summary, etc. | Ernest Lavisse is one of the major figures of the French Third Republic. He undeniably played a major role in the organization of uni-versity studies, the edition of three Histoire de France, and the publication of numerous primary school textbooks, the Petits Lavisse. It might seem obvious that he actively led the fight for the values of the Republic, in particular secularism. A close analysis yet reveals how his textbooks have long lagged behind the progress of secularism. Between the permanence of a Christian reading of history and the transfer of sacredness from religion to the nation, he advocated, but belatedly and gradually, an open conception of secularism that addressed the concerns of Catholics and guiding them towards the Republic. |
