| Summary, etc. | Les enseignants d’histoire et de géographie jouent dans le développement de leurs disciplines un rôle fondamental et sont bien les relais espérés par les élites républicaines dans leur volonté de rénover l’enseignement supérieur. S’ils sont trois en 1887, ils sont désormais huit en 1914 et onze en 1939. Ce petit monde est particulièrement structuré, homogène socialement, où s’impose la figure du professeur titulaire. Issu des classes moyennes de la société, cet enseignant, sans être un héritier, appartient souvent à une famille qui travaille déjà pour l’État républicain, même s’il existe quelques figures de boursiers conquérants. L’intégration dans l’université passe par l’obtention d’un certain nombre de titres et l’acceptation de certains rites. Agrégation et doctorat sont des éléments fondamentaux mais, s’ils sont nécessaires, ils ne sont plus suffisants. Le passage par les écoles de renom est aussi un atout supplémentaire qui doit s’accompagner d’une activité fondamentale de recherche. Plus de 60 % des historiens et géographes lillois passent par la rue d’Ulm ; 89 % d’entre eux sont parisiens de par leurs études supérieures ; la moitié ajoute à cette formation un séjour dans une autre école de renom. Si la faculté recrute sur l’ensemble du territoire national, les flux de sorties sont en revanche très organisés. 64,70 % des mutations sont dirigées vers les institutions d’enseignement supérieur de la capitale. Ces universitaires ne sont pas pour autant des déracinés et plus de la moitié d’entre eux restent au moins dix ans à Lille, prenant le temps de s’intégrer dans les diverses sociétés savantes. Au niveau politique, toutefois, les historiens et géographes font preuve de beaucoup de retenue. Leur position officielle est celle de la neutralité et du travail en dehors des querelles partisanes. Ils véhiculent cependant, par leurs écrits et leurs discours, un certain nombre de valeurs qui en font des fidèles de la République bourgeoise. Patriotes mais pas nationalistes, ils célèbrent la grandeur de la France, terre des droits de l’Homme. |

| Summary, etc. | Jean-François CONDETTE, History and Geography Lecturers at the Lille Arts Faculty under the Third Republic (1887-1940). The history and geography lecturers play a fundamental role in the development of their field of study and effectively assume the relaying part that was expected of them by the republican elites in their efforts to renovate higher education. If there are only three of them in 1887, their ranks reach a number of eight in 1914 and eleven in 1939. This little world is socially homogeneous and highly structured around the figure of the tenured professor. Originating in the middle classes of society, this lecturer, though not an heir, still belongs to a family that is already working for the republican state, even if among them can be found some upwardly mobile scholarship holders. The integration within the ranks of the university is achieved through being awarded a certain number of titles and accepting certain rituals. The « Agrégation » and the completion of a PhD are fundamental elements but, though they are necessary conditions, they are no longer sufficient. Having been through renowned schools is an added asset and has to be complemented by a fundamental research commitment. More than 60 % of the Lille historians and geographers have been students of the « Rue d’Ulm »; 89 % of them have completed their studies in Paris; half of them have supplemented this training with attendance at one or other renowned school. If the faculty recruits its lecturers on a nationwide basis, the outcoming flow is indeed very much organized. 64,70 % of the job transfers are headed towards the higher education facilities of the capital. This university personnel is not uprooted and more than half of them stay at least ten years in Lille, taking time to get integrated in various learned societies. From the political point of view, however, these lecturers display a lot of restraint. Their official position is one of neutrality and of work outside partisan involvement. Yet, through their writing and their words, they reflect a certain number of values that make them faithful followers of the bourgeois republic. Patriots without being nationalists, they celebrate the grandeur of France, the Civil Rights homeland. |

| Summary, etc. | De docenten geschiedenis en aardrijkskunde spelen een essentiële rol niet alleen in de ontwikkeling van hun discipline maar ook in de vernieuwing van het hoger onderwijs die gewenst was door de elite van de Republiek. Er zijn drie docenten in 1887, acht in 1914 en elf in 1939. Dit wereldje is sociaal homogeen en hecht gestructureerd rond de dominante figuur van de professor titularis. De docenten behoren tot de middenklasse, niet als erfgenamen van een patrimonium, maar eerder als kind van ouders die al voor de Republiek werkten. Er zijn ook een paar beursstudenten met ambitie. De integratie in de universtaire wereld verloopt via de verwerving van titels en de aanvaarding van rites. Aggregatie en doctoraat zijn een sleutel maar voldoen niet. Het is ook nodig in een paar gerenommeerde scholen te onderwijzen en tegelijkertijd aan wetenschappelijk onderzoek te doen. Meer dan 60 % van de Rijselse aardrijkskundigen hebben in de Rue d'Ulm onderwezen; 89 % hebben hoger onderwijs in Parijs gekregen; voor de helft komt daar een onderwijservaring in een andere goed aangeschreven school bij. De faculteit krijgt studenten uit heel het land maar levert vooral afgestudeerden (64,70 %) aan de hogere onderwijsinstellingen in Parijs. Deze universitairen blijven geen vreemdelingen in Rijsel waar meer dan de helft tenminste tien jaar woont. Tijd genoeg om lid te worden van de plaatselijke wetenschappelijke verenigingen. Op politiek gebied blijven zij neutraal en mengen zich niet in de strijd tussen partijen. Zij dragen door geschrift en voorbeeld bij tot de verspreiding van een aantal waarden van de Burgerrepubliek die zij trouw dienen en tonen zich zo patriotisch maar niet nationalistisch. Zij verheerlijken de grootheid van Frankrijk als land van de mensenrechten. |
