Summary, etc. | The church of Saint Maurice in Usson in Auvergne has, within its walls, a 15th century Resurrection of Lazarus. It was commissioned by Louis bâtard de Bourbon and Jeanne bâtard de France, illegitimate daughter of Louis XI, following their marriage. The very rare iconography pointed out by an insistent gesticulation has taken on meaning through the in-depth study of the historical context. It revealed a double reading and showed the hidden portraits of the King giving his daughter in marriage to Louis bâtard de Bourbon and pictures the fortress of Usson. Made at the request of the spouses, this panel is the work of an anonymous artist, referred to as the Maître d’Usson. Painter and illuminator in the line of Fouquet, he would have collaborated with Jean Colombe during the second half of the 15th century. |
