| Summary, etc. | L’étude d’une grande domus à péristyle d’époque sévérienne de la cité d’ Aregenua a notamment permis d’étudier un aspect particulièrement mal documenté de l’habitat urbain des élites des Trois-Gaules : celui du décor architectonique et sculpté. À côté des traditionnels mosaïques, peintures et stucs auxquels on est trop souvent contraint de se borner pour appréhender le décor domestique, la reconstitution d’une partie de la décoration lapidaire fait apparaître le caractère volontairement ostentatoire de cette parure ornementale, dont les formes étaient empruntées à l’architecture publique. Elle participait à l’officialisation des espaces publics de la domus dans lesquels elle se concentrait massivement (entrée, péristyle et salons) et visait à affirmer la puissance du propriétaire. Le cas de cette maison constitue donc un jalon capital pour la connaissance du cadre décoratif domestique dans lequel évoluaient les notables provinciaux et de son rôle. Il permet en outre de constater la pérennisation, la diffusion et l’adaptation de pratiques élaborées à Rome à la fin de la République et encore connues sous l’Empire, mais surtout étudiées en Italie ou en Afrique. |

| Summary, etc. | Pascal VIPARD, The Role of Ornementation in the Official Rooms of a Peristyled Domus of the Early IIIrd Century: the Case of the Maison au Grand Péristyle (Vieux, Calvados). The study of a large peristyled domus of the Severius period in the city of Aregenua allowed us notably to study a particularly ill-documented aspect of the urban habitat of the Three Gauls elites: that of the architectonic and sculpted ornementation. Beside the traditional mosaics, paintings and stuccoes to which one is too often forced to restrict oneself to comprehend the domestic decoration, the reconstitution of a part of the stone decoration brings to light the deliberately ostentatious character of this ornementation, whose shapes drew massively on public architecture. It played a major role in officializing the public reception areas of the domus in which it was heavily present (hall, peristyle and drawing rooms) and aimed at asserting the owner’s power. The case of this house constitutes thus an essential milestone in the knowledge of the domestic ornemental framework in which provincial notabilities lived and its role. It allows also to ascertain the perennialization, the extension and the adaptation of manners developed in Rome at the end of the Republic and still known under the Empire, but essentially studied in Italy or in Africa. |
