Summary, etc. | D’après les sources de l’État bourguignon, le recrutement du personnel musical de l’hôtel entre 1460 et 1506 fut conforme à la hiérarchie des traditions musicales de l’époque, dominée d’une part par les chantres franco-flamands et leurs quelques concurrents anglais, et d’autre part par les instrumentistes allemands qui supplantèrent la dynastie des célèbres joueurs de vièle espagnols de Philippe le Bon. Des indices montrent cependant que la désignation ethnique des musiciens dans les sources comptables n’était pas d’ordre purement administratif. Le fait que seules des origines de musiciens recoupant des traditions artistiques reconnues y soient mentionnées confirme certes la domination de ces traditions, mais trahit sans doute aussi une conception signifiante de l’appartenance « nationale », que soulignait vers 1482 le théoricien Johannes Tinctoris en louant le talent d’un chantre de Charles le Téméraire à travers l’image conflictuelle de ses deux « nationalités » : celle, ethnique, de son ascendance chypriote et celle, plus importante, de sa culture typiquement brabançonne. |

Summary, etc. | According to the records of the Burgundian State, the recruiting of the musical personnel of the « hôtel » between 1460 and 1506 was carried out in conformity with the hierarchy of the musical traditions of the time, dominated, on the one hand, by the Franco-Flemish cantors and their few English competitors, and, on the other hand, by the German instrumentalists who supplanted the dynasty of the famous Spanish hurdy-gurdy players of Philip the Good. Certain clues show all the same that the ethnic designation of the musicians in the accounts of the court was not of a purely administrative order. The fact that only origins of musicians overlapping recognized artistic traditions were mentioned confirms indeed the dominant position of these traditions, but without doubt betrays also the meaningful conception of the « national » belonging, that the theorician Johannes Tinctoris underscored around 1482 when he praised the talent of a cantor of Charles the Bold’s through the conflicting image of his two « nationalities » : that, ethnic, of his Cypriot descent, and that, more important, of his typically Brabant culture. |
