| Summary, etc. | Terrain de recherches encore largement en friche, le travail des femmes suscite de multiples approches historiques, commandées, entre autres, par la nature des sources utilisées. Au départ des traditionnels registres de population, la présente communication propose de déterminer le poids des femmes actives à Seraing, de 1846 à 1880, tout en tenant compte des diverses critiques formulées à l’encontre de cette source pour les mentions professionnelles du moins. Alors que l’industrie lourde (houillerie, sidérurgie et verrerie) domine largement les activités économiques, le pôle sérésien se caractérise par une ségrégation sexuelle de son marché du travail. Outre l’influence de la conjoncture, celle-ci découle de l’influence de la société bourgeoise mais aussi des médecins qui attribuent à la femme une mission « naturelle » : demeurer dans son foyer afin d’éduquer les enfants et d’entretenir la maison. |

| Summary, etc. | Although it is still a field of research largely untilled, women’s work lends itself to multiple historical approaches, that find their origins, among others, in the nature of the sources used. Resorting at first to the traditional population records, this study aims at assessing the importance of feminine employment in Seraing, from 1846 to 1880, while taking into account the various criticisms addressed against this source, regarding at least the job descriptions. While heavy industry (coal-extraction, steel-making and glass-making) largely dominate economic activity, the Seraing pole is characterized by a gender segregation of its labour market. Beyond the conjunctural influence, this latter arises from the influence of the bourgeois society but also of the medical doctors who impart women with a « natural » mission : that of staying at home in order to bring up the children and take care of the house. |
