| Summary, etc. | Les ducs de Bourgogne laissent entrevoir dans leurs testaments, à travers des formules parfois stéréotypées, leurs dévotions et leurs exigences funèbres. Comme la plupart des princes à la fin du Moyen Âge, ils ont fondé une nécropole dynastique, la Chartreuse de Champmol, qui illustre, à travers la pierre, la continuité dynastique et le prestige de leur sang. Ils souhaitent y reposer « en entier » et ne sollicitent pas, dans leurs testaments, de division corporelle. Comme d’autres princes, ils éparpillent leurs legs pieux dans l’ensemble de leurs duchés et comtés, enracinant la présence ducale dans toutes les principautés. Si la piété des ducs de Bourgogne semble donc conforme à celle des « grands », les prescriptions funèbres de Philippe le Hardi sont en revanche originales. Influencé par la spiritualité cartusienne, le duc renonce aux funérailles fastueuses spécifiques à son rang, au profit d’une cérémonie simple, plus propice au salut de son âme. |

| Summary, etc. | Princely Devotions at the End of the Middle-Ages : The Dukes of Burgundy’s and their Families’ WillsThe wills left by the Dukes of Burgundy let us see, through a sometimes hackneyed rhetoric, their devotions and their funeral requirements. Like most princes at the end of the Middle-Ages, they founded a dynastic necropolis, the Champmol Carthusian House, which illustrates through its stonework the continuity of their dynasty and the prestige of their blood. They wish to be laid there to rest « undivided », and do not express in their wills that their bodies be dismembered. Like other princes, their scatter their pious legacies over the whole of their dukedoms and earldoms, rooting thus the ducal presence in all their principalties. If the Dukes’ piety seems thus to be identical to that of the « great », Philip the Bold’s funeral prescriptions are noteworthy. Influenced by Carthusian spirituality, the Duke renounces the ostentatious funerals specific to his rank, and prefers a simple ceremony, better fitted to the salvation of his soul. |
