| Summary, etc. | Infatigable organisateur, Raoul Dautry a fait preuve d’opiniâtreté pour promouvoir l’éducation physique au sein des œuvres sociales cheminotes. Sa passion pour l’Hébertisme se révèle à partir des années 1920 quand il exerce des fonctions d’ingénieur à la Compagnie des chemins de fer du Nord. C’est à Ermont qu’il teste ses conceptions en favorisant la construction d’un vaste complexe qui offre aux cheminots la possibilité de pratiquer l’éducation physique et les sports. L’expérience se propage ensuite sur l’ensemble des cités du réseau, se généralise dans la corporation des chemins de fer et gagne d’autres secteurs de l’industrie.Deux types de raisons poussent Raoul Dautry à devenir un ardent promoteur de la méthode conçue par Georges Hébert. Son engagement hébertiste se fonde, d’une part sur une conception solidariste de l’action sociale qui rappelle les théories de L. Bourgeois, et d’autre part, sur une stratégie de contrôle des syndicalistes.Ainsi, dans les cités-jardins de cheminots, la méthode naturelle est employée autant à des fins hygiéniques, pour susciter un engagement professionnel ou un attachement à l’entreprise, que pour pondérer l’ardeur des militants et apparaître alors comme un recours au rayonnement des forces progressistes. |

| Summary, etc. | An untiring organizer, Raoul Dautry proved his determination in promoting physical education among the welfare societies of railwaymen. His passion for Hebert’s thinking comes to light in the 1920s while he is working as an engineer for the Compagnie des Chemins de Fer du Nord. It is in Ermont that he will put to the test his conceptions by promoting the construction of a vast facility designed to offer the railwaymen the possibility to practice sports and physical education. This experience will then spread to all the network’s other housing estates, to all the railwaymen corporation and to other branches of activity.Two types of reasons prompt Raoul Dautry to become a keen promoter of the method proposed by Georges Hébert. This Hebertist commitment rests first on a solidarity-based conception of social action which reminds one of the theories of L. Bourgeois, but also on a strategy of control of the union leaders.Thus, in the railwaymen’s garden-estates, the natural method is developed as much for reasons of promoting hygiene, arousing professional commitment or dedication to the company as to dampen the activists’militantism and appear thus as a alternative to progressive forces. |
