| Summary, etc. | RésuméLes populations occupant les régions de la terre habitée situées entre le parallèle qui va de l’île Ierné et celui qui correspond aux cours du Tage et de l’Istros, une zone tenue par les Grecs pour le Grand Nord, sont, au-delà de leur diversité, unifiées par Strabon au moyen d’une constante, leur proximité par rapport à la nature, ce qui, d’un côté, les rend sauvages, inintelligentes et paradoxales, mais, de l’autre, préserve leur bonté, leur simplicité et leur vertu. Les stéréotypes véhiculés par Strabon relèvent moins d’observations objectives que de représentations mythiques, littéraires et scientifiques. Ils visent en effet à conforter l’idéologie de la romanisation : ces peuplades peuvent s’apprivoiser et constituent ainsi un vivier de ressources humaines précieux pour les besoins de Rome. |

| Summary, etc. | Northern Spaces and Peoples in the Mythical Representations of Antiquity GreeksThe populations occupying the regions of the inhabited earth situated between the parallel that runs along the Ierne Island and that which corresponds to the courses of the Tagua and Istros rivers, an area considered by the Ancient Greeks like the Extreme North, are, beyond their diversity, unified by Strabo by the means of a constant, their vicinity to nature, which, on the one hand accounts for their being wild, unintelligent and paradoxical, but on the other preserves their generosity, their simplicity and their virtue. The stereotypes on which Strabo relies derive less from objective observation than from mythical, literary and scientific representations. They aim indeed at comforting the ideology of Romanization : these populations can be domesticated and thus constitute a preserve of human resources that can prove to be invaluable to meet Rome’s needs. |
