| Summary, etc. | RésuméL’existence de stéréotypes dans les représentations collectives des gens du Nord à l’endroit du Midi et des méridionaux est bien connue. Il existe une image du méridional, exubérant et vantard, ridicule et fanfaron, hâbleur et inconséquent. Il s’agit ici de tenter de démontrer que la période de l’entre-deux-guerres connaît un changement d’échelle et une mutation de nature qui transforment la vieille dialectique du Nord et du Midi en un véritable anti-méridionalisme ou nordisme. La consistance doctrinale de ce régionalisme exacerbé trouve sa cohérence dans l’affirmation du rôle de la France du Nord dans l’œuvre de sauvegarde et de régénérescence des valeurs nationales. La chance unique du pays tout entier réside dans la vitalité et la fécondité du Nord. S’il est difficile de quantifier précisément la diffusion de ces idées, plusieurs indices permettent d’affirmer une certaine influence. Quoi qu’il en soit, la période de reconstruction qui suit la première guerre mondiale, puis la crise économique des années trente sont primordiales dans la constitution de ce corpus de représentations. |

| Summary, etc. | The Anti-North or the Southern PerilThe existence of stereotypes in the Nord people’s collective representations towards the South and the Southerners is well known. There exist an image of the Southerner, exuberant and bragging, ridicule and swaggering, talking big and inconsequent. The issue in this paper is to demonstrate that the inter-war period is characterized by a change of scale and a mutation of nature which transform the old North-South dialectic into a real anti-meridionalism or northism. The doctrinal consistence of this exacerbated regionalism finds its coherence in the assertion of the role of northern France in the effort to safeguard and regenerate the national values. The unique opportunity for the country as a whole resides in the vitality and the fecundity of the North. If it proves difficult to quantify accurately the spreading of these ideas, some clues lead us to think that they had some kind of influence. All the same, the period of reconstruction that follows World War I, then the economic depression of the thirties, played an essential role in the constitution of this corpus of representations. |
