| Summary, etc. | Même si la campagne est demeurée attachée à la figure du noble, la ville est devenue au xviiie siècle le lieu de résidence de nombreuses familles de « sang bleu » attirées par les emplois et le mode de vie urbains. De fait, le processus d’urbanisation touche une part importante des lignages du Cambrésis qui choisissent une résidence dans la capitale archiépiscopale. Noyée dans la société urbaine, la noblesse était dispersée dans l’espace de la ville. Pourtant, les déménagements dénotent un processus d’agrégation résidentielle, particulièrement visible au sein des lignages les plus fortunés ; la visibilité de la noblesse, grâce aux hôtels particuliers aux façades austères, grandissait autour des lieux de pouvoir et de quelques rues périphériques. L’appropriation du logement prestigieux achevait alors de fixer ces familles dans l’espace urbain. |

| Summary, etc. | The Nobility in the City at the End of the Ancient Régime, the Example of CambraiEven if the countryside remains attached to the figure of the nobleman, the city has become in the xviiith century the dwelling place of many « blue-blooded » families attracted by urban employment and the city way of life. As a matter of fact, the process of urbanisation concerns a large number of the families of the Cambrai area who chose to dwell in the archiepiscopal capital city. Hardly visible in the city’s society, the nobility scattered all over the city. Yet, as they moved houses, processes of residential aggregation can be noted, particularly obvious among the wealthiest lineages ; the visibility of the nobility, through its stern-fronted town houses, kept growing around the decision-making centres and some neighbouring streets. The appropriation of prestigious housing completed thus the settling of these families within the urban space. |
