| Summary, etc. | RésuméApparue avec l’industrialisation précoce du Nord, la confrontation d’ouvriers français et belges, sur les chantiers ou dans les usines, n’alla pas sans susciter quelques rivalités nationales. L’immigration belge, qui est avant tout une immigration de travail, peut en effet être perçue, si le travail vient à manquer, comme une forme de concurrence contre laquelle les ouvriers français veulent s’élever. Il faut toutefois considérer que cette immigration n’est pas uniforme et face à l’ouvrier définitivement installé en France, intégré, voire assimilé, au saisonnier ou au migrant journalier, les réactions des ouvriers français furent sensiblement différentes. Pourtant, peu à peu, se dessine, au-delà des considérations nationales, une culture politique commune, portée par la perception d’une condition similaire, et relayée par la construction d’une identité ouvrière de plus en plus affirmée. |

The Example of the Belgian Labourers in the Nord Department from the Middle of the xixth century to the Inter-War PeriodThe early industrialization of the Nord gave rise to a confrontation between French and Belgian workers on building sites or in factories, which in turn inevitably led to national rivalries. Indeed the immigration from Belgium, which was above all an immigration related to work, could be considered as a kind of competition – if there was a shortage of work – against which French workers felt prompted to revolt. However, it must be noted that this immigration assumed different forms and that the reaction of French workers towards the workers who had permanently settled in France, who were integrated or even thoroughly assimilated, and towards the seasonal workers or those who commuted every day, were slightly different. And yet, beyond national considerations, a common political culture was gradually developing, through the awareness of their common condition, and turning into an increasingly stronger working-class identity. |
