| Summary, etc. | RésuméTechniquement rien ne différencie le travail du coton de celui du lin quand le premier s’installe en France septentrionale et dans les Pays-Bas autrichiens au xviiie siècle. Les organisations économiques des deux filières sont par contre radicalement distinctes : le travail du coton s’articule autour du Putting out system quand celui du lin repose presque exclusivement sur le Kaufsystem. Les deux filières entrent rapidement en concurrence tant pour les débouchés, que pour le marché du travail. Quand l’une opte pour une mécanisation précoce, la seconde se retranche derrière la tradition manuelle, quand le travail du coton se mécanise et se concentre en ville, celui du lin s’efforce de demeurer rural et domestique. De la fin du xviiie siècle au milieu du xixe, les deux filières évoluent de manière diamétralement opposée, au point que se dessine une géographie de territoires du travail très marqués et peu perméables l’un à l’autre. |

| Summary, etc. | Dual Textile Manufacturing in Flanders from the XVIIIth to the middle of the XIXth centuryTechnically nothing differentiates the processing of cotton from the processing of flax when the former is introduced in northern France and in the Austrian Low Countries in the xviiith century. The economic organizations of the two industries are on the contrary radically distinct : cotton work revolves around the Putting out system when flax relies almost entirely on the Kaufsystem. The two industries are soon to develop into competitors both in terms of markets and on the labour market. When one opts early on for an extensive mechanization, the other shelters itself behind the manual tradition, when cotton processing becomes ever-more mechanized, and settles in town, flax processing tries to remain rural and house-based. From the end of the xviiith century to the middle of the xixth, the two industries develop in diametrically opposed directions, to such an extent that a highly visible geography of the work territories can be made out, territories that are hardly permeable to each other. |
