Summary, etc. |

Summary, etc. | Collective Habitat and Employers’ Initiatives in the Textile Industry of Northern France Between the WarsGeorges Forest (1881-1932), architect in Tourcoing, dedicated his whole career to industrial architecture. Originating from a cloth-making background, he could rely on the powerful network of patrons constituted by the textile manufacturers of the Nord. The after-war context and the numerous reconstructions that have to be carried out enable him to put his mark on the urban landscape as early as 1919. The growing awareness by the employers of the necessity to house a numerous manpower allows the architect and his firm to develop into new programs, working-class housing. If the organization in space of the buildings designed by Forest does not offer any significant innovation, decorative research flourishes on the facades. References to neighboring Belgium and the hints at regional patterns bring variety to the architect’s lore of designs and are still today an essential feature of the towns of northern France. |
