| Summary, etc. | RésuméIssu d’un lignage prestigieux, allié aux plus grandes familles d’Europe, et implanté solidement dans le Nord de la France, Waleran de Luxembourg se comporte au cœur de la guerre de Cent Ans comme un grand seigneur, disposant de nombreux réseaux d’alliances au sein de la noblesse française et de revenus conséquents. Ceci lui permet de mener une politique personnelle, dont l’exemple le plus marquant est le défi qu’il lance à Henri IV de Lancastre, roi d’Angleterre, en 1404. Ses liens avec le royaume d’Angleterre, sa longue captivité à Londres, son mariage avec Maud Holland, sœur utérine de Richard II, ainsi que la localisation de ses domaines, non loin de la frontière de Calais, conditionnent l’ensemble de sa politique. Il agit également dans l’entourage des princes, notamment des ducs de Bourgogne, dont la faveur lui permet d’effectuer une carrière brillante au début du xve siècle. Malgré quelques hésitations dans les années qui suivent la mort de Philippe le Hardi, il s’engage totalement dans le conflit contre les Armagnacs, devenant le principal chef de guerre de Charles VI et de Jean sans Peur. Malgré tout, les dernières années de sa vie semblent ternir ce tableau, puisqu’il perd sa place de premier plan sur la scène politique et militaire française ; de plus, il n’a aucun fils légitime à qui léguer ses domaines et les fruits de son engagement auprès des princes. |

| Summary, etc. | Waleran de Luxembourg, a High-Ranking Lord Caught Between Loyalty and Opportunism (late xivth-early xvth centuries)A scion of a prestigious lineage, allied with the highest houses in Europe, strongly rooted in northern France, Waleran de Luxembourg behaves, in the heart of the Hundred Years’ War, like a high-ranking lord, who can take advantage within France’s nobility of numerous networks of alliances and a hefty income. This allows him to develop a policy of his own, whose most notable example is his challenging Henry IV of Lancaster, King of England, in 1404. His connections with the kingdom of England, his long captivity in London, his marriage to Maud Holland, Richard II’s uterine sister, as well as the situation of his possessions, not far from Calais, condition his whole policy. He is also active in the inner circles of power, particularly those close to the dukes of Burgundy, whose patronage helps him to develop a brilliant career in the early years of the xvth century. In spite of some hesitation in the years following the death of Philip the Bold, he fully takes sides in the conflict against the Armagnac, becoming Charles VI’s and John the Fearless’ main war chief. Yet, the last years of his life seem to tarnish the picture as he loses his standing in both the political and the military life of France ; moreover, he has no legitimate son on whom to bestow his possessions and the benefit of his commitment to the princes. |
