| Summary, etc. | Cet article analyse les pratiques cannibales chez les indiens Tupunamba à partir du statut singulier des prisonniers de guerre qui en sont systématiquement les victimes. Il décrit de façon minutieuse les rites par lesquels ces prisonniers, intégrés avant d’être ingérés, devaient passer du statut d’ennemi absolu à celui d’allié. Un seul mot en tupi désigne l’une et l’autre relation: « tovaja ». C’est donc cet ennemi, marié au sein du groupe, ainsi devenu beau-frère, qui sera mangé. On lui donne la sœur, il est tué par le frère. Comme si ce besoin de transformer en beaux-frères ceux sur qui ils se vengent manifestait une manière de se représenter un ordre désiré où n’existeraient pas de telles relations, qui n’est peut-être rien d’autre que l’idéal de la « Terre sans mal », celui de la suppression des différences, bref, l’idéal d’une convivialité absolue. |

| Summary, etc. | This paper analyses cannibal practices among the Tupinamba Indians based on the singular status of the prisoners of war who are systematically the victims. It meticulously describes the rites by which these prisoners, integrated before being ingested, had to pass from the status of absolute enemy to that of ally. A single word in Tupi designates both relationships: tovaja. It is therefore this enemy, married within the group, thus becoming a brother-in-law, who will be eaten. He is given the sister and killed by the brother. As if this need to transform those on whom they take revenge into brothers-in-law manifests a way of representing a desired order where such relationships would not exist, which is perhaps nothing other than the ideal of the “Earth without evil,” that of the suppression of differences; in short, the ideal of an absolute conviviality. |
