| Summary, etc. | RésuméEncore aujourd’hui, l’histoire de l’industrialisation en Europe s’écrit principalement dans un cadre national. Pourtant les frontières entre États ont eu sans doute moins d’importance pour la diffusion de l’industrialisation que l’on ne le croyait autrefois. Elles ont peu affecté les transferts de technologie, de main-d’œuvre et de capitaux et n’ont pas représenté d’obstacles insurmontables pour les échanges de marchandises, surtout durant la phase libre-échangiste du milieu du xixe siècle, mais aussi ensuite, lors du retour de la plupart des pays européens au protectionnisme. Cet article explore les voies par lesquelles une nouvelle histoire économique de l’Europe pourrait être écrite, à partir du point de vue régional qui, depuis Sidney Pollard, semble particulièrement approprié à l’analyse du processus d’industrialisation. Le concept de région motrice en est le moyen. On propose ici leur identification à partir d’indicateurs simples tels que l’intensité des taux de croissance sectoriels, les parts relatives dans l’économie, le dynamisme technologique, les effets d’accompagnement exercés sur d’autres régions. Une telle orientation permettrait de mieux comprendre l’industrialisation qu’à partir d’un cadre national souvent inadapté aux réalités. |

| Summary, etc. | Still today, the history of industrialization in Europe is primarily written within national boundaries. Yet, inter-state borders probably had a lesser impact on the spreading of industrialization than was previously assumed. They hardly affected technology, labour and capital transfers and they did not represent insurmountable obstacles for the exchange of goods, above all during the mid-XIXth century freetrade phase, but even later, when most European nations had returned to protectionist policies. This article explores the ways in which a new economic history of Europe could be written, from the standpoint of the region, which, since Sidney Pollard, seems to have been recognized as particularly suited to the analysis of the industrialization process. The means to this end will be the concept of pilot region. This paper advocates their identification by means such simple indicators as the strength of branch growth rates, their relative shares in the economy, their technological dynamism, the accompanying effects they have on other regions. This approach would permit to understand the industrialization process better than from within a national framework that too often appears unsuited to describe realities. |
