| Summary, etc. | RésuméLes régions-pilotes sont des agencements territoriaux répondant à la nécessité d’un rendement économique optimum. Leurs limites géographiques fluctuent dans le temps. De plus, dans le cas remarquable de l’ensemble des bassins industriels qui s’étire du Pas-de-Calais au nord de la Ruhr, les frontières politiques ont plutôt favorisé l’émergence de régions transfrontalières dans lesquelles les transferts technologiques, les complémentarités ont favorisé l’essor industriel. Ces régions-pilotes présentent un type d’urbanisation spécifique, formé d’un semis urbain plutôt que de métropoles proprement dites. Apparues à la suite du processus d’industrialisation généré par la révolution industrielle de la fin du xviiie siècle, ces régions-pilotes ont dû affronter plusieurs reconversions industrielles et la dernière en date – des années 1970 à nos jours – constitue une mutation profonde en termes de performance économique, d’aménagement du territoire, de développement durable, d’identité. |

| Summary, etc. | Pilot regions are territorial organizations responding to the necessity of an optimal economic yield. Their geographical boundaries shift over time. Moreover, in the remarkable case of all the manufacturing basins that stretch from the Straits of Dover to the north of the Ruhr, political borders rather contributed to the emergence of cross-border regions in which technology transfers and complementarities bolstered industrial development. These pilot regions feature a specific type of urban organization, consisting in disseminated urban housing rather than in proper metropolises. These pilot regions, that first appeared in the wake of the industrialization process which itself resulted from the industrial revolution of the late XVIIIth century, had to cope with several industrial reconversions the latest of which – starting in the 1970s and lasting to these days – constitutes a profound mutation in terms of economic performance, organization of the territory, sustainable development and identity. |
