| Summary, etc. | RésuméFondée en 1836 à partir de la fusion entre deux entreprises de céramique sarroises, la firme Villeroy & Boch illustre l’étroitesse des relations entre des familles qui sont établies dans un même espace, celui de la Sarre, du Luxembourg et de la Lorraine septentrionale et ont pris l’habitude de coopérer à l’intérieur du grand marché résultant du rattachement de cet espace à l’Empire napoléonien. Face à la multiplication des barrières douanières, la nouvelle entreprise réagit en les contournant par la création de nouveaux établissements productifs situés dans les pays où elle écoule ses fabrications. Fortement innovatrice, elle devient un acteur important de l’industrialisation régionale. À partir des années 1850, elle limite ses implantations nouvelles à des usines situées à l’intérieur de l’espace germanique. Elle dispose en effet d’un important avantage concurrentiel à l’exportation, dû à une production de masse, des économies de combustible, une main-d’œuvre peu onéreuse, de constantes innovations, tous facteurs qui compensent largement les tarifs douaniers frappant ses articles. |

| Summary, etc. | Founded in 1836 from the merger of two Saarland pottery firms, the Villeroy & Boch company illustrates the closeness of the ties that exist between the families that are established within the same spatial area, that of Saarland, Luxemburg and northern Lorraine, and that have grown used to cooperating inside the larger market resulting from the integration of this area to Napoléon’s empire. Faced with the multiplication of customs barriers, the new company reacts by bypassing them through the creation of new production facilities situated in the countries where it markets its goods. A highly innovative company, it becomes a major player in regional industrialization. After the 1850s, it restricts its newer implantations to plants situated inside the German space. It benefits indeed from an important competitive advantage on the export markets, due to mass production, fuel efficiency, cheap manpower, permanent innovations, factors that combine to compensate largely the duties that are imposed on its products. |
