| Summary, etc. | RésuméLes compagnies de gens de trait apparues au Moyen Âge dans les villes et dans certains villages assument une double fonction : protection des lieux, service du seigneur ou du prince. Leur organisation et leurs tâches sont réglementées dans des textes concédés par l’autorité seigneuriale ou territoriale. Archers et arbalétriers sont liés par un serment et se caractérisent par le port d’armes et de « livrées », un équipement dont la possession leur est toujours garantie. Ils bénéficient aussi de clauses écrites de non-préjudice en cas d’accident fortuit. Les ducs de Bourgogne recourent à leurs services avec une marge d’efficacité qui demeure difficile à apprécier. L’évolution vers une armée nouvelle, dans le dernier quart du xve siècle, conduit ces dynasties à préférer l’imposition de charges fiscales à l’exigence de prestations militaires. À travers les textes connus, le droit d’association au sein des compagnies relève encore de la volonté ou du consentement du prince. |

On the Privileges Granted the Longbow and Crossbow Archers’ Brotherhoods in the Netherlands in the xvth CenturyThe companies of archers established in the Middle-Ages in the towns and in certain villages fulfill a double function : protection of the premises, service to the lord or the prince. Their organization and their duties are regulated by documents granted by the lord’s or the territorial authority. Longbow and crossbow archers are bound by an oath and are characterized by the fact they carry a weapon and wear a ‘livery’, a gear whose possession is always guaranteed them. They also enjoy the benefit of written provisions of non-liability in case of a fortuitous accident. The dukes of Burgundy resort to their services with a margin of efficiency that proves difficult to assess. The move towards a new army, in the last quarter of the xvth century, prompts these dynasties to prefer the levying of tax duties to the requirement of an armed service. According to the available documents, the freedom of association within the companies remains subjected to the decision or consent of the prince. |
