| Summary, etc. | À l’occasion d’un diagnostic archéologique réalisé dans la ville de Dunkerque au sein de l’hôpital royal militaire, a été découverte une fosse de la période moderne contenant quatre crânes humains, accompagnés des fragments de trois mandibules et de trois portions de rachis cervicaux. L’examen anthropologique des ossements a permis l’identification de modifications de surface sur les trois rachis cervicaux conservés. L’analyse de la morphologie de chaque trace permet de les attribuer avec certitude à des actions de découpe, et plus précisément à un décharnement et une section des muscles et ligaments du cou, visant à la séparation des blocs céphaliques. Si les exemples de crânes humains isolés sont fréquents pour les périodes pré- et protohistoriques, la découverte de têtes coupées dans un contexte chronologique moderne soulève de nombreuses interrogations quant à la nature de ces vestiges. Eu égard au contexte de leur découverte, plusieurs hypothèses peuvent être envisagées, parmi lesquelles celles d’autopsies ou de dissections à but anatomique, en relation avec les enseignements prodigués au sein de l’hôpital, ou encore celle de pièces anatomiques initialement conservées au sein d’une collection appartenant à l’établissement. |

| Summary, etc. | The Severed Heads of Dunkirk’s Royal Military HospitalAn archaeological intervention conducted within the premises of the Royal Military Hospital in the town of Dunkirk, led to the discovery of a pit dating to the Modern period ; this was found to contain four human skulls, accompanied by fragments of three mandibles and three parts of cervical rachis. The anthropological examination of the bone remains revealed surface alterations on three of the upper spine elements that were sufficiently conserved. The analysis of the morphology of each mark enables us to connect them, with certainty, to severing actions, and more precisely to a removal of the flesh and a severing of the muscles and ligaments of the neck, aimed at separating the cephalic elements. If instances of isolated human skulls are frequent in the pre- and proto-historic periods, the discovery of severed heads in a modern chronological context raises numerous questions about the very nature of these remains. Given the context of their discovery, several hypotheses can be considered, among which those of a post-mortem or of an anatomical dissection may be posited, in relation to the teaching delivered in the hospital, or again that of anatomical items once kept as part of a collection belonging to the hospital. |
